□ ITS World Congress 2026 in Gangneung

Gangneung City will host the World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS World Congress) from October 19 to 23, 2026 at Gangneung Olympic Park. This is the first time for a small or medium-sized city to host the event, and it is expected to be an opportunity to show the world that intelligent transportation systems, which have mainly been applied and developed in large cities, can be successfully implemented in small and medium-sized cities.

An intelligent transport system (ITS) integrates various advanced technologies such as electronics, information, communication, and control into transportation infrastructure and vehicles to provide traffic information and services, enabling scientific and automated traffic operation and management. ITS is attracting attention as a key technology for future mobility and smart cities as it can dramatically improve traffic efficiency and safety.

The ITS World Congress, first held in Paris, France, in 1994, is the largest international exhibition and conference in the field of ITS. Often referred to as the “Olympics of Transportation,” it rotates annually among Asia, the Americas, and Europe. It has become a global platform for experts from government agencies, research institutes, corporations, and academia from more than 70 countries to gather together to discuss the future of transportation technology and share the latest technologies.

In addition to the opening and closing ceremonies, the ITS World Congress 2026 in Gangneung will feature a variety of official events, including ministerial meetings, gala dinners, technology exhibitions, and academic sessions. A key highlight will be hands-on demonstrations and field tours, allowing participants to experience the ITS infrastructure built throughout Gangneung and see firsthand the potential of the city’s smart transportation system.

​□ “Beyond Mobility, Connected World”

​The ITS World Congress to be held in Gangneung in 2026 will be global event that merge cutting-edge technology and culture under the theme of “Beyond Mobility, Connected World.” Gangneung City plans to take advantage of the event to position itself as a global city leading the way in future mobility, and to further raising Korea’s status in smart transportation by presenting a sustainable smart transportation model suitable for small and medium-sized cities to the world.
